Microscopic evidence of life
On 5 March 2011 there was publication of news that NASA astrobiologist Richard B. Hoover has announced what he believes to be fossil evidence of structures similar to bacteria on CI1 carbonaceous chondrites. There has been previous discussion of the possibility of fossilized cyanobacteria in the Orgueil Carbonaceous Meteorite however the new evidence is reportedly of larger, more complex forms similar to Titanospirillum velox. There is however arising unanswered criticism based on method of publication, similarity to past "news" on the subject and previously debunked similar claims by NASA scientists. 6. History
Carbonaceous chondrites with a CI chondrite in the center (Tagish Lake - CI 2)There are very few finds of CI chondrites, six so far altogether.
The oldest find dates back to the year 1806: two meteorites were seen near Alès (or Alais) in France. Consequently two pieces weighing 6 kilograms were discovered near Saint-Étienne and Valence.
In 1864 another fall happened in France at Orgueil near Montauban. The meteorite had disintegrated into 20 pieces weighing a total 10 kilograms.
In 1911 a meteorite was seen near Tonk (Rajasthan) in India. Only a few fragments were recuperated that weighed a mere 7.7 grams.
The meteorite of the type locality Ivuna in Tanzania fell in 1938 splitting into three pieces of altogether 705 grams.
This was followed in 1965 by a fery bright fall in Revelstoke, British Columbia, but only two tiny fragments of 1 gram were found.

All in all roughly 17 kilograms of CI-chondrites exist so far.

During the Apollo 12 mission a meteorite was found 1969 on the moon, which was first thought to be a CI chondrite, but later turned out to be a closely related CM chondrite.
In 2000 a fall occurred at Tagish Lake in the Yukon Territory. This meteorite is meanwhile included within the CI chondrites, although it contains chondrules. It has been designated CI 2. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CI_chondrite)

Revelstoke, a new Type I carbonaceous chondrite

Folinsbee, R. E.; Douglas, J. A. V.; Maxwell, J. A.

Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta, vol. 31, Issue 10,October 1967 pp.1625-1628

The Revelstoke meteorite fell on March 31, 1965 in a desolate glaciated mountain-area in southeast British Columbia. Visual observations indicate that the bolide travelled along an azimuth of 093 at an inclination to the horizontal of 15°. About l g of disaggregated material was recovered from the snow on a small frozen lake lying along the trace of the trajectory. This material was initially identified as a Type I carbonaceous chondrite by direct comparison by X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy with the Orgueil meteorite. Textural and mineralogical relationships in Revelstoke closely resemble those of Alais and Orgueil. The chemical composition of Revelstoke is similar to that of Orgueil.
